Volunteer Spotlight: Paula Davis

We’re kicking off a new newsletter series on the 3rd Friday of each month! Welcome to our volunteer spotlight, where we’ll share the voices and stories of our volunteers who do so much to make our organization great.

How did you first get involved with BBP?

I first became involved with BBP around 15 years ago. BBP occupied the old Rescue Mission on Front Street—no running water, bathrooms, heat. I sorted parts and cleaned up areas. It was a monumental day when several bikers rode, carried, pushed, transported all the bikes and parts to the Lusk location. I have always loved bicycling and loved finding a volunteer opportunity with a nonprofit bike organization.  Friends have said that they don't know much about bikes or riding, but like the mission of BBP, I reply that BBP is an amazing place to volunteer if you want to help others, connect community and do good. And maybe you will even learn to change a flat.

Do you have a favorite/fun memory in regards to the Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway or another volunteer opportunity?

My favorite volunteer activity (among many) is the Kids' Bashes. The Holiday Bash is awe-inspiring, but I love the smaller monthly events. I feel that I can connect with the families and see the joy in the kids' faces on a more intimate level.

What bike are you currently riding?

I currently have a Trek Road bike. And I purchased a Specialized Stumpjumper, which I am working on customizing a bit—a challenging task for me

What’s the most memorable ride you’ve ever been on? Why?

I ride occasionally to raise money for multiple sclerosis (in my nephew's honor) and a few years ago I completed a one-day century ride on the Trail of the Coeur d' Alene MS Charity Ride.

Describe your dream bike ride.

As I have entered my 7th decade, I have been drawn to explore multiple day rides—touring (Probably supported touring.). We will see!

Besides biking, what is something you can’t live without? OR What inspires you besides biking?

Other passions I have and support: Wildlife conservation and its intersection with people's lives. I volunteer at Boise Zoo. The Zoo supports and partners with Gorongosa Park in Mozambique, Africa. I travelled there 3 years ago and saw first-hand how equally essential it is to support both people and wildlife in an area.

What’s a random fact people might not know about you?

I play in a marimba band.  We are going to start up in May again—so excited! I own ranch property (190 acres) with 12 other people near up Grimes Creek. Piece of paradise and LOTS of labor of love!!

My simple pleasures are…

Simple pleasures: cross-country skiing (love snow and winter), hiking and backpacking, reading and hanging out at my ranch property.

My mantra is…

Each day is a gift.
