Bikes of BBP (& their humans): Meet Malcolm
I think we can all agree that despite social distancing, we are finding meaningful ways to connect. Kindness and connection. That’s what I’m experiencing right now. I really feel that, through this challenge, our commitment to humanity is so strong, and that we are all looking inward and outward to explore what matters most.
During this time of pause, we want to share the stories of our bikes and their humans.
Your name: Malcolm
Your pronouns: He/Him/His
Your bike make & model: 2014 Specialized AWOL
When did you build your bike?: I actually bought it before I knew how to work on bikes, so it was a stock build from George's
Your bike name: Gertrude
What’s the story of your bike?: I bought Gertrude for a solo cross-country tour from Oregon to Virginia. Since then I've enjoyed slowly upgrading it and riding it almost every day. Last summer, Gertrude, my partner, and I rode from Vancouver, Canada to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and I intend to keep touring and exploring with it as much as possible!
What’s your favorite feature on your bike?: A custom sleeve reinforcement on my top tube resulting from an unfortunate incident involving a bike lock, a pier, and the tides.
What’s your favorite ice cream?: Mint chip
What’s does Nina (BBP’s Engagement Coordinator) appreciate most about Malcolm? “When Malcolm is in the shop he is an incredibly helpful mechanic, has a great sense of humor, great stories, and contagious positivity. I enjoy watching him work with customers, because he is great with teaching all skill levels and provides thorough lessons. I appreciation working with Malcolm because you can always rely on him for anything that comes up. BBP is so lucky to have him around!”
What does Patricia (BBP’s Facilitator) appreciate most about Malcolm?: “His self awareness!! The way he speaks to others, apologizing when required and speaking up for himself makes the perfect combo!!! Way to go Malcolm!!”
What’s Malcolm currently doing during our shop closure?: Running in the foothills, exploring dirt roads by bike, reading science-fiction, and starting a garden.
