Americans waste $72 BILLION on finding parking. What if that time and money was spent at your business?
One of my favorite perks of bicycling is the ability to find parking quickly, close to my destination, and for free!
Parking is a huge pain; we all know it. Where I spend my money is highly dependent on if that business has ample bike parking. But recently I considered the fact that it isn’t always easy for a business to provide bike parking. I think of businesses on roads like Overland, Broadway, and even State St. that are not bicycle friendly and how that may impact the businesses’ decision to provide parking. BBP wants to help.
The League of American Bicyclists have a Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) program with over 1,000 awarded businesses throughout the United States, 56 of them in Idaho. It’s a great program for a business committed to environmental sustainability and employee well-being on a national level.
With a growing number of businesses working sustainability and corporate responsibility into their company values, becoming a Bicycle Friendly Business has become more important than ever!
As one of the 52 Platinum Bicycle Friendly Businesses in the nation (yes we are bragging!), BBP can tell you what we love about it:
Our neighborhood doesn’t have a lot of parking, but it’s not a problem for us because the majority of us bike to the shop! BBP staff are encouraged to bike by receiving a $250 commuter fund for our bicycle riding needs, a $60 stipend for a new helmet every 3 years, and indoor parking!
The majority of our customers bike to BBP, and choose to because of our proximity to the Greenbelt and downtown and because of our easily accessible bike parking.
Because most of us bike, we take bike rides together! BBP has bad days just like every other business, and we love that we can take a bike ride together before or after we open for a quick morale boost.
On average, tardiness is lower when we bike, because we get to (safely and legally) pass all the cars stuck in traffic. Truly vindicating to our choice of biking.
We don’t have to pay for parking passes! The closest parking lot to BBP charges $60/month; with 15 staff members, BBP saves $900/month!
By now you are probably thinking, “Dang ol’ dang, I want to get my business signed up as a Bicycle Friendly Business!”
We want you to as well! Which is why we are here to help. We have relaunched a new and improved Business Membership Program! As a BBP Business Member, you not only get free and discounted individual memberships for your staff, free lunch and learns and other perks, but you get the help from us to improve your BFB ranking that ultimately helps transform Boise into the bicycling capital of America! It’s a win-win-win situation.
If your business or place of employment is interested, you can learn more about each level on our Business Membership page, and email nina@boisebicycleproject.org to get signed up.
