Volunteers: Restructure, Rebuild, Repair!

I’m hopping in with a preface that this is Maureen’s first blog post! You can look forward to hearing her voice a lot more from now on…. -Em

Restructure, Rebuild, Repair

These three words have become my mantra for 2020, so you can’t imagine how fortunate I feel to be joining an organization whose mission and values are steeped in the belief these words hold. And although these are challenging and unusual times, I have been inspired by the volunteers’ and members’ ability to adapt and adjust to staying safely involved and deeply committed to building a stronger bicycling community. Whether it’s seasoned volunteers flipping their garages to create a bike workshop, or someone reaching out to volunteer for the first time, we are fortunate to have so many helping hands.

All of this people power couldn't come at a better time! With so many families impacted by the pandemic it's more important than ever that we reach our goal of giving 500 bikes to kids here in the Treasure Valley on December 19th.

So, how can you get involved? Great question!

  • New Volunteer Orientation via Zoom (date TBD): If you’re a new volunteer, we highly recommend that you join before signing up for a shift.  We recognize this might be your 7th Zoom call of the day, so we'll keep it short and sweet and hopefully a little fun too!

  • Kids Bike Drive Week, October 12th-17th: In an effort to limit group gatherings, our bike drive will run for an entire week. We need your help spreading the word!

  • Donate: Do you have a bike that needs a new home? We'll take it! Drop by our warehouse space (the old Pizza Hut down the street from BBP) to drop off bikes or spare parts.

  • In-Person Volunteers: We have a variety of positions to choose from, whether you are mechanically inclined or interested in helping us with other HKBG Prep, we’ll need your help. Please make sure to create your volunteer profile (which you can do here) before signing up for a shift. Then check back on our website for the most up-to-date volunteer opportunities (or click here!)

  • **New Youth Shifts** We’re stoked about the incredible number of younger volunteers who are interested in getting involved. Be sure to check out our newly created shifts specifically for volunteers under the age of 16 in the Open Volunteer Hours or any opportunities in the Kids Bike Drive Week.  Shifts are listed here.

  • Volunteer from home: Some of the most important shifts we have allow you to work from the comfort of your own home. Stay tuned for shift opportunities to help with important record keeping—registration and indexing—of the bikes for the HKBG.

Don’t see a shift that works for you? We’re flexible! We recognize people have other time commitments so please let me know and we can work together to make something work for all of us.

We’ve been working hard to ensure everyone feels safe during Kid’s Bike Week, and during all of our events. For more information on our safety measures, check out our COVID protocol on BBP’s website.

Thank you again for your continued support. We are excited about working together toward another successful Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway!
