A Somber Accident at BBP

The damage from the vehicle that struck BBP. We’re still not sure what costs this damage may incur.

Dear BBP Community,

In the early hours of Friday, December 9th, our community received a sobering reminder of the urgent need for safer roads in Boise. A driver crashed into the front of the Boise Bicycle Project- an incident that thankfully resulted in no injuries but underscored the prevailing issue: our roads continue to prioritize cars over people.

At BBP, we are committed to providing our community with accessible and affordable biking options, fostering a culture where everyone can confidently choose biking as a mode of transportation. However, we can no longer ignore the pressing reality that our current road infrastructure poses a significant risk to the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.

Today, we call upon each member of our community to unite in the effort to transform Boise's roads into places of refuge for everyone. We propose these actionable steps:

Choose Active Transportation

  • Make a commitment to opt for active transportation, such as walking or biking, for at least one of your trips each day. By collectively embracing alternative modes of transport, we can visibly challenge the status quo and better advocate for the prioritization of safety for all road users.

Contact Your Legislators

  • Reach out to your local, state, and federal legislators and demand increased investment in designated bike and pedestrian infrastructure and funding to enhance road safety. As we approach the 2024 Idaho Legislative Session, your voice is crucial in urging policymakers to prioritize the well-being of cyclists and pedestrians in our community.

Adopt a Dream Bike

  • On December 16th at BBP’s Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway, 500 + kids will be getting possibly their first bike ever. Adopting a dream bike will help a kid in need receive a bicycle this holiday season. Many of these kids don’t have any other way than by bike to get to school. We are unsure how this incident will affect our organization going forward, so you can support by sponsoring and adopting a dream bike here or making a general donation here.

Join our Advocacy Committee

  • BBP’s Advocacy Program seeks to challenge the paradigm of urban mobility and the safety of our streets. We do this through hosting events, temporary interventions, and cycles that raise citizen awareness, spark public debate, and ultimately drive behavior change around the role of streets in Boise. Every second Monday of the month BBP’s Advocacy Committee meets to discuss ongoing challenges, upcoming public meetings or projects, and fun activities to spark community action. If you want to be part of this sign up here.

The Boise Bicycle Project and like-minded organizations need your support to effect positive change. Together, let's make our voices heard, emphasizing the importance of road safety and advocating for necessary measures.

We invite you to join us in this pivotal moment for Boise's future. By taking these actions, you contribute to a safer, more sustainable, and inclusive community.

Thank you for your commitment to making a difference.
