Friends of BBP: Meet Carlos

Our “Bikes of BBP” series wrapped up last week, but we’ve had so much fun sharing our own stories that we want to use this platform to introduce you to some of our friends, supporters, and community partners. First up is Carlos, Executive Director of SWIMBA. (Ever wondered how all of Boise’s incredible mountain bike trails get built and maintained? Chances are, SWIMBA is involved.)

Here’s Carlos operating SWIMBA’s trail building machine…looks fun!

As a kid, Carlos Matutes found freedom on a bicycle thanks to a local BMX track in his Texas town. Since then, he has continued to immerse himself in all forms of cycling, from BMX, to mountain biking, to road racing and endurance events. At one point, he even rode a rigid, fixed-gear mountain bike on the trails.

Experience as a mechanic and working for a cycling parts distribution business has helped Carlos see all sides of our sport. He eventually found himself in Boise, Idaho, seeking life in the mountain west. His passion for bikes and making a difference in his community led him to the position of Executive Director of SWIMBA, Southwestern Idaho Mountain Bike Association. He wants mountain biking to be accessible to people of all economic levels, not just those who can afford expensive bikes and long trips to faraway trails.

After riding hardtails exclusively for the last 20 years, Carlos has been loving the control and responsiveness of his Knolly Fugitive. The fact that Knolly donated a portion of the proceeds from this limited edition "Trail Builder" frame to their local advocacy group doesn't hurt!

Below are picks of Carlos’s Knolly Fugitive and that rigid, fixed gear ride mentioned above!
