Bikes of BBP & Their Humans: Meet Jimmy

I’m so extremely fortunate to work alongside Jimmy and call him my friend. Jimmy has such big passion and a big heart to match that passion. He’s truly one of the most visionary people I know. He’s also really funny and really kind. He loves things that are weird and rough around the edges. He cares so much about BBP and the work we do here, and he’s just a little bit weird like the rest of us…

Your name: Jimmy Hallyburton

Your pronouns: He, Him, His

Role at BBP: Executive Director / Founder of BBP

Your bike make & model: 1992 Ross Minotaur Signature Series (not as special as it sounds)

When did you build your bike?: In 2014 I was walking through BBP's backyard when I noticed a terribly bright yet faded green and yellow frame sitting at the bottom of BBP's scrap pile. When you're 6'2 and a child of the early 90s, big frames with bright ugly colors catch your eye pretty easily. It was on its way to the metal recycling yard because of a bent front fork, destined to be shipped overseas and melted down into something less pedal powered. I pulled it out of the pile, took it home, and a strange obsession began. It was like an ugly puppy, so ugly that it's adorable and consuming of your undying love and attention. It's such a dumb, ridiculous, and "nothing special" bike, that brings me pure joy every time I climb on board. Other than the Murray BMX bike of my youth, I have never loved a bicycle more, probably because it embodies everything I love about BBP.

Your bike name: My BBP Bike

What’s the story of your bike?: Maybe/Hopefully it was appreciated when it was new, then it went through some hard times and came to BBP broken and at the end of its journey. Some hopelessly hopeful dude (yours truly) saw its true potential and decided to give it another shot. In Frankenstein's monster fashion, it was rebuilt from the parts of other deceased bikes and willed back to life. In the last 6 years it has covered 1000s of miles with a dog tow (Stanley then Ned), crossed mountain passes with camping gear in its double baskets, ridden through blizzards, downpours, micro bursts, heatwaves, and earthquakes, and it has no signs of giving up/in soon.

What’s your favorite feature on your bike?: Its double basket nerdness and its ahead-of-its-time ability to run big 700c tires. I guess the now rusting Klunker handlebars rank high too.

What’s your favorite ice cream?: Soft serve from a dumpy gas station on a hot day. Or whatever ice cream sandwich option they have sitting in the cooler.

What have you been up to lately?: Oh boy… trying to pedal up the never ending hill of 2020 but I guess that’s the “capital J” Journey…
