Bikes of BBP & Their Humans: Meet Nina

I think we can all agree that despite social distancing, we are finding meaningful ways to connect. Kindness and connection. That’s what I’m experiencing right now. I really feel that, through this challenge, our commitment to humanity is so strong, and that we are all looking inward and outward to explore what matters most.

During this time of pause, we want to share the stories of our bikes and their humans.

Nina and her Centurion Le Mans Mixte. Nina is rocking her Thousand Helmet, which you can purchase at BBP online and pick up at the shop. We’re the only Thousand dealer in the city!

Your name: Nina Schaeffer

Your pronouns: She/Her

Your bike make & model: Centurion Le Mans Mixte

When did you build your bike?: I didn't build my bike! One of our mechanics did. I came in one morning and saw it for sale and knew I had to get it!

Your bike name: Kronk. The name is Kronk because it has lever friction shifters and reminds me of The Emperors New Groove.

What’s the story of your bike?: This is the first bike I bought for myself! Previously I was riding a Gary Fisher hand me down from my dad that was waaaay too big for me. After getting my LCI training I learned I had to get a better fit bike to teach responsibly on. I've had it for almost a year, added the handlebars, Brooks grips and saddle, a basket and new yellow housing.

What’s your favorite feature on your bike?: I love the design of the bicycle! The lugs are painted with yellow and maroon, and the same colors are used to decorate the fork. Almost all the components are Suntour (even the derailleur I just replaced). It's a beautiful bike, and the addition of the handlebars and honey leather accessories make it even better!

What’s your favorite ice cream?: My go to is anything with chocolate chunks. Cherry Garcia is my classic choice, but I recently discovered a women-owned business called Coolhaus, and their Chocolate Molten Cake is my current favorite.

What’s Nina currently doing during our shop closure?: I am continuing to run our Membership Program and communicating with new and current members what their impact means for BBP. In addition, I am posting bicycles for sale online, writing for our newsletter and posting on social media what is happening here at the shop!

What does Christa (Youth Programs Coordinator) appreciate about Nina?: “I appreciate Nina's kick-ass hard work through which she shares her dedication to her community.  Equally beautiful, though, mixed in with all her hard work, is her love of silliness and fun!  (Beyond BBP: I have been LOVING her hilarious instagram stories :)”

What does Camille (shop mechanic) appreciate about Nina?: “Nina is SO much fun to work with! She is incredible at her job, and at checking in with everyone at BBP! She always has my back and isn't afraid to stand up for what she believes in.”
