Bikes to Kids
BBP gives bicycles to kids 13 and under for free all they have to go through one of our bicycle safety programs (BASH see below). If they are too young to participate in BASH, they must be referred to us from another charitable organization (schools, churches, after school programs, social workers, etc).
B.A.S.H. (Bicycle Skills and Safety Hour) (2nd Sat, 10:30 at the BBP shop)
A free hour long class for kids K-6th grade. This fun class is available to anyone who wants to learn about safe bicycle riding, and is mandatory in order to receive a free bicycle. Classes meet on the 2nd Saturday, 10:30am at the BBP SHOP. Bring your bike and helmet if you have one, if not, use one of ours. Please contact us if you plan on attending.
Ladies Wrench Night (2nd Thursday, 6-8pm, or It’s always Ladies night at BBP)
Now on the 2nd Thursday of every month. Once a month BBP hosts a special Ladies only open shop time. The evening features an optional volunteer orientation, classes, special volunteer projects, and regular open shop activities.
Earn-a-Bike (Earn-a-Bike Orientation is the 3rd Sat at 10:30am. Registration opens on the 1st of each month)
This program is for those who need a bicycle but would rather trade work time instead of paying cash dollars. Once you’ve completed one of our free Earn-a-Bike orientations it takes about 12 hours of work time to complete our Earn-a-Bike checklist. Then you can pick out any bike priced $60 or under and begin fixing it for yourself. The idea behind Earn-a-Bike is that you not only receive a bicycle but also the knowledge of how to keep it running. (For ages 17 and under, it only takes 6 hours of time).
Friday Night Bikes (Members only, every Friday 6-8pm)
Every Friday night, BBP hosts an hour long hands on members only class covering a specific area of the bicycle or mechanic skill. The idea is that you will become an expert on a new topic each week, and eventually will be able to conquer the universe. The class topic will be posted 2 weeks ahead of time on the calendar and class topics can be requested for later dates. (Feel free to bring beverages and snacks).
CABBY Certified Volunteer
If you want to take your volunteering and mechanic skills to the next level, you need to get Certified At Basic Bike “Yoperation,” aka CABBY. As a CABBY will be trained to help customers with bike repair, bike fitting, sales, and other customer related issues as they come in the door. You’ll be like Marcus, but without the chicken legs, and the fat paycheck. This is a great way to get your foot in the bike mechanic door, as well as help the community. To become a CABBY you need to attend 2 orientations, once as a participant, and once as an assistant. Once both orientations are completed you will be issued a CABBY checklist that needs to be completed within 1 month. We also offer CABBY classes on Wednesday from 7-8pm for those who need extra assistance with their checklist. When your checklist is completed you will be issued an exclusive CABBY apron and name tag, and can begin signing up for CABBY shifts. Enough shifts can lead to extra shop benefits. Next time you’re in the shop, let us know if you want become a CABBY, and we’ll get you started.
Volunteer Orientation 1st Saturday of each month from 10:30am-noon (Ladies only orientation on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6pm)
At least 2 times a month, BBP host a free 1 hour long VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION thats certifies you to begin volunteering and working on bicycles the BBP way. It is fun, informative, and a great introduction to cooperative bicycle maintenance. After you’ve completed orientation, all you have to do is show up during any of our Open Shop or Volunteer only times, and say I’m here to help. Orientations classes fill up fast, so register early (email, call, or sign up at the shop).
Volunteer Orientation times can be found on our CALENDAR page. If you have an idea for a special project you would like to volunteer for, please email or call us and let us know. Contact
We believe that everyone should have access to quality bicycles and bicycle education. We offer several programs to make that access attainable.
